The Texas Longhorns are heading into the SEC Tournament with a clear mission: secure a top-8 seed and keep their postseason dreams alive in Austin. Head coach Mike White knows the stakes are high, and he's keeping it simple.
Texas (39-10, 16-8 SEC) has slipped to No. 10 in the latest NFCA poll, their lowest ranking this season. But here's the good news: they're still sitting pretty at No. 4 in the NCAA's RPI ratings and boast the nation's second-toughest strength of schedule, trailing only fellow SEC powerhouse LSU.
So, what does it take to lock in that coveted top-8 seed and host both the Regional and Super Regional rounds? According to White, it starts with winning at least one game in Lexington.
"I think that, obviously, we'd want to go as far as we can in this tournament, but I would say we've probably got to win a game for sure," White said. "Hopefully, that first one gives us a more solid chance of being in (the top eight). Looking at our strength of schedule and our RPI, we're sitting pretty well. We've just got to get some wins, so that's a big goal."
One win would likely be enough to secure a top-8 seed. But that's a big "if"—and it comes in the form of Tennessee's 6-foot-1 ace, Karlyn Pickens. The fifth-seeded Vols face No. 13 Ole Miss in the second round Wednesday afternoon. If Tennessee wins, they'll meet the fourth-seeded Longhorns in Thursday's quarterfinal showdown.
Pickens, the top pick in the recent AUSL College Draft and a two-time SEC Pitcher of the Year, has been dominant despite limited innings (112). Her numbers are eye-popping: a 1.44 ERA, 154 strikeouts, and a career-low opponent batting average of .126. With a fastball that touches 78 mph, she's a matchup nightmare for any lineup.
For Texas, the path to hosting a super regional runs straight through Pickens and the Volunteers. The Longhorns have the metrics on their side—now they need the wins to match.
