In the high-stakes world of Hawaii girls flag football, sometimes the strongest connections are the ones you least expect. For Moanalua's dynamic duo, Breidi-Ann Higa and Jodie Keo, that connection is both family and football—and it's proving unstoppable.
The second cousins, who only met two years ago, delivered a powerhouse performance in the semifinals of the Hawaii Dental Service/HHSAA Division I State Championships. Higa completed 18 of 38 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns, while Keo hauled in five catches for 88 yards and two scores—plus an interception that flipped the game's momentum. The result? A commanding 30-12 victory over Campbell at Mililani.
"We all did our jobs, did our assignments and executed it well," Higa said after the win.
For a team that thrives on execution, this was a masterclass. Moanalua (15-1) scored 24 unanswered points, turning a tight contest into a statement win. The defensive effort was just as impressive, with Styralynn Hoakalei Reyes recording 10 pulls and the unit clamping down when it mattered most.
"The defense was a key to the game today," Moanalua coach Ladd Mokiao said. "We did good film studies and we knew to key on certain players."
The family connection adds a special layer to this story. Higa and Keo—whose grandfathers are brothers—finally met when Higa was an eighth grader and Keo a freshman at Moanalua. "We met like two years ago and ever since then we got closer," Higa explained. "This school year brought us closer."
On the field, their chemistry was immediate. Moanalua struck first with 7:21 left in the first quarter on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Higa to Keo—a play set up by Keo's goal-line interception and 52-yard return. "It really brought our energy up," Keo said. "Getting that pick, it just proves that we work hard and if we listen to our coach and stick to what we know, we can come out on top."
Campbell answered with a 5-yard quarterback keeper from Alexiis Amanonce Feliciano to tie the game at 6-6. But Moanalua's response was swift. Higa found a wide-open Keo for a 29-yard touchdown on fourth down, then connected with Iorana Simanu for a 16-yard score just before halftime. Simanu finished with six catches for 96 yards.
The dagger came in the third quarter when Zaira Sugui knocked the ball loose from Campbell's quarterback, and Jaclyn Smith scooped it up for a 28-yard fumble return touchdown, extending the lead to 24-6.
Now, Na Menehune turn their attention to the ultimate prize: a state championship showdown against Mililani tonight at 7 p.m. For a team that's built on trust, hard work, and a little bit of family magic, the stage is set for something special.
