Springboks' Ntlabakanye given 18-month doping ban

South Africa prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye is banned for 18 months for breaking anti-doping rules - ruling him out of the 2027 World Cup.

The Springboks have been dealt a significant blow as rising prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye has been handed an 18-month ban for violating anti-doping regulations—a suspension that will sideline him through the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

The 27-year-old Lions front-rower tested positive for Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a banned substance known to boost testosterone levels, enhance muscle growth, and improve athletic performance. DHEA is strictly prohibited under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules, making this a clear violation of the sport's integrity standards.

According to the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), Ntlabakanye "self-declared" using DHEA under the mistaken belief it was permissible. However, an independent doping tribunal panel ruled otherwise, issuing the 18-month ban effective from May 13. With the suspension running until November 2027, Ntlabakanye will miss the entirety of the World Cup in Australia, a major setback for both the player and the Springboks' depth chart.

The Lions, his Johannesburg-based club, confirmed the sanction in a statement, noting that SAIDS had informed them of the "anti-doping rule violation." The club added that they "will continue to support Ntlabakanye as he navigates the process ahead," though the player has 21 days to appeal the decision.

Ntlabakanye's rise had been a bright spot for South African rugby. He made his Springboks debut against Italy in July 2025 and has since earned three caps, showcasing the powerful scrummaging and physicality that made him a fan favorite. His last appearance came in a United Rugby Championship defeat to Leinster on Saturday, a match that now marks the end of his playing days for the foreseeable future.

For rugby fans and those following the Springboks' World Cup preparation, this is a stark reminder of the importance of staying informed about anti-doping rules. As the sport continues to emphasize clean competition, players at all levels must ensure they know what's allowed—because one mistake can derail a career.
