In a major boost for South African cricket, legendary fast bowler Shabnim Ismail has reversed her international retirement and will feature in the Proteas squad for this summer's T20 World Cup in England. Known for her blistering pace—among the fastest in women's cricket—the 37-year-old hasn't worn national colors in over three years but remains her country's all-time leading wicket-taker in the format.
Ismail's return adds serious firepower to a South African side that has been runners-up in the last two T20 World Cups. She's joined in the squad by fellow opening bowler Marizanne Kapp, who has recovered from illness, and the experienced Dane van Niekerk, who also came out of retirement in the past year and is now fit after a calf injury.
The Proteas open their campaign against defending champions Australia on 13 June, followed by matches against Pakistan, India, the Netherlands, and Bangladesh. With momentum on their side after a dominant 4-1 series win over ODI world champions India, this squad looks ready to contend for the title.
"Having someone like Shabnim back adds a lot of value to the group," said head coach Mandla Mashimbyi. "We had good conversations and you could see the hunger she still has to represent South Africa and help this team achieve something special."
