When you look at the Rutgers football roster heading into 2026, few positions raise more eyebrows than tight end. After breaking down the linebackers and the running back rotation behind Antwan Raymond, it's time to turn our attention to a group that's wide open—and frankly, a bit uncertain.
Right now, there's no clear standout at tight end. The veterans of the room, Logan Blake and Mike Higgins, have done solid work as blockers, but their production in the passing game has been minimal. Blake has hauled in just three catches over his three seasons in Piscataway, while Higgins has only five in that same span. They bring experience, but the receiving threat just isn't there yet.
Then there's Ben Rothhaar. The sophomore appeared in six games last season without recording a stat, but don't count him out just yet. Tight ends coach Scott Vallone has praised Rothhaar's work ethic and practice performance, so it wouldn't be a shock to see him earn more playing time this fall, especially with the position so up for grabs.
Rutgers also added some fresh blood through the transfer portal, bringing in Kameron Anthony from Ball State. After sitting out his first season, Anthony showed promise as a sophomore with seven catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns. However, he suffered an Achilles injury late last season and has been rehabbing all offseason. He's not expected to be fully ready until just before the season kicks off, making him more of a developmental piece for the future rather than an immediate answer.
Rounding out the depth chart are freshmen DJ Howerton and Brady Owens. The coaching staff was high on both coming out of high school, so expect them to see the field at some point this season. With so much uncertainty at the position, youth and potential might just get their chance to shine.
