Oh, Hello: MA Quarterback Will Wood Commits To Penn State Football

Penn State gets their QB for 2027!

In a major win for Penn State football's future, the Nittany Lions have secured a commitment from class of 2027 quarterback Will Wood. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound signal-caller from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts, announced his decision exclusively to Rivals, declaring, "Happy Valley I'm H🦁ME, let's get to work!"

Wood chose Penn State over a competitive field that included Boston College, Arkansas, and West Virginia. Currently rated a three-star prospect and the No. 37 quarterback nationally by Rivals, he also held offers from Maryland and Syracuse. His stock has been rising rapidly, and he's now considered the No. 3 player in Massachusetts—a testament to his recent standout performances.

The commitment came after a strategic pivot by head coach Matt Campbell and his staff. Initially, Penn State had focused heavily on Peter Bourque following his decommitment from Michigan. However, when heavyweights like Georgia and Ohio State entered the picture—along with Virginia Tech, led by former Penn State staffers—Bourque ultimately chose elsewhere. That opened the door for Wood, and the Nittany Lions didn't hesitate.

Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser, quarterbacks coach Jake Waters, and three other assistants made a coordinated visit to Wood in early May, signaling just how serious they were about landing him. Boston College, with its own ties to former Penn State coaches, pushed hard as the local favorite, but Penn State's full-court press won out.

Two months ago, Wood might have been viewed as a consolation prize, but he's proven he's a legitimate talent in his own right. His build and playing style draw comparisons to current Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht, and his trajectory suggests he could be a cornerstone for the program.

Looking ahead, Wood enters a quarterback room that currently includes Peyton Falzone, Kase Evans, Alex Manske, and Connor Barry as backups to Becht for 2025. However, with Falzone possibly switching positions, Manske recovering from an injury, and Barry graduating alongside Becht, the depth chart could look very different by the time Wood arrives. That means he'll have a real chance to compete for the starting job as early as his freshman season—though the likelihood of Penn State turning to the transfer portal for a veteran starter in 2027 remains a factor to watch.

For now, Nittany Lions fans have every reason to be excited about the arm talent and potential Will Wood brings to Happy Valley.
