The Mexican Football Federation threatens to drop players from the country's World Cup squad if they fail to report for a training camp this week.

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has laid down the law: any domestic player who skips this week's mandatory training camp will be left off the World Cup squad. It's a high-stakes ultimatum that's already causing friction between club and country.

Coach Javier Aguirre has called up 20 Liga MX players for a camp starting Wednesday, May 6, at the FMF's High-Performance Centre in Mexico City. Of those, 12 are guaranteed spots on the final World Cup roster. But here's the catch—the camp falls outside FIFA's international window, meaning it directly clashes with crucial Liga MX playoff matches and Concacaf Champions Cup fixtures. Players have until 8 PM local time Thursday to report, or they're out.

The tension is already boiling over. Toluca faces a must-win second leg against LAFC in the Champions Cup semifinals on Wednesday, trailing 2-1 on aggregate. They asked the federation to keep forward Alexis Vega and left-back Jesús Gallardo with the club for the match. That request didn't sit well with Chivas de Guadalajara, who had already released five players to the national team camp.

Chivas president Amaury Vergara fired back by recalling all five of his players—goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, midfielder Luis Romo, U.S.-born midfielder Brian Gutiérrez, winger Roberto Alvarado, and forward Armando González. In a statement on X, Vergara wrote, "Agreements are made to be honored." The FMF, however, remains firm: no exceptions, no excuses.

Mexico is co-hosting this summer's World Cup alongside the U.S. and Canada, and the pressure is on. The final 23-man squad will be announced June 1, with warm-up friendlies against Ghana (May 22), Australia (May 31), and Serbia (June 4) before their tournament opener against South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca on June 11.

For fans following the drama, this is more than a training camp—it's a test of loyalty, discipline, and the delicate balance between club ambitions and national pride. The message from Aguirre and the FMF is clear: if you want to wear the green jersey this summer, you'd better show up.
