After nearly eight years of chasing glory, Luiz Gustavo finally reached the mountaintop at Rizin 53 in Kobe, Japan, claiming the lightweight championship with a devastating first-round knockout of Ilhom Nazimov.
The Brazilian veteran, who fell short in his title bid last September, made his second chance count in spectacular fashion. Gustavo (16-4) handed Nazimov (13-4) his first loss under the Rizin banner, finishing the fight at 2:08 of the opening round.
Early in the bout, Nazimov controlled the cage well, cutting off Gustavo's movement and landing spinning back kicks to the body. The Tajikistani fighter appeared comfortable in the striking exchanges—until Gustavo landed a thunderous right hook that sent Nazimov crashing to the canvas. The champion wasted no time, following up with four punishing blows to seal the victory.
The win marks a remarkable redemption arc for Gustavo, who has now fought 12 times for the promotion. His path forward may include a familiar foe: former champion Roberto Satoshi de Souza, who stopped Gustavo in just 21 seconds at Rizin 48 but was himself knocked out by Nazimov on New Year's Eve. With de Souza announced to return this summer, a rematch between the two could be the promotion's next big move.
In the co-main event, Ren Hiramoto and Koji Tanaka fought to a time-limit draw in an openweight boxing match. Hiramoto dominated all three rounds, using sharp jabs and left hooks to control the smaller Tanaka, but couldn't secure a finish.
Meanwhile, featherweight contender Ryo Takagi (11-3) spoiled the Rizin debut of a former Road to UFC finalist, adding another layer of intrigue to an already stacked division.
