The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a new era, and it's all about building around Luka Dončić. Since acquiring the 26-year-old superstar at last season's trade deadline, the front office has made one thing crystal clear: this is now Luka's team. And according to reports, Dončić isn't interested in taking the slow road to contention.
"Dončić told Lakers president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick in May that he's not interested in taking the slow approach in building a contender," CBS Sports' Jasmyn Wimbish wrote. That sense of urgency is exactly what fans want to hear, especially with the Lakers sitting on a unique amount of cap space this offseason.
Silver Screen and Roll's Bryan Toporek noted that "the Lakers have a megastar in Dončić and a unique amount of potential cap space for a title hopeful this offseason. This summer will go a long way toward determining how well they can build a championship contender around Luka over the next few years."
So, what's the big move? One intriguing possibility involves a familiar face: Anthony Davis. The 10-time All-Star and Finals champion, who signed a $58.4 million contract, could be heading back to Los Angeles. Davis was traded to the Washington Wizards in the deal that brought Dončić to L.A., but a reunion might be on the horizon.
"Davis controls this situation. He didn't want to leave the Lakers. The ten-time All-Star may be eager to return," wrote Lake Show Life's Tyler Watts. "Fans would love that idea. It would force LA to craft a hefty package to match his $58.4 million salary. It isn't impossible, but it wouldn't leave much wiggle room to build out the roster around Luka Doncic."
A Davis return would be a game-changer for the Lakers. He already has strong chemistry with much of the roster, and more importantly, he's the perfect lob threat for Dončić. Luka thrives with big men who can run the floor and finish above the rim—and Davis does exactly that, while also providing elite defense and championship experience.
Bringing back a player of Davis's caliber would send a clear message: the Lakers are all-in on winning now. Whether they can pull off the trade and still fill out the roster remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—this offseason is going to be anything but quiet in L.A.
