For nearly two decades, Jay Glazer has thrown an annual pool party for NFL head coaches during the league's owners meetings—and veteran sportswriter Jeff Pearlman is finally asking the question nobody else will: why does Glazer get a free pass?

In a recent TikTok, Pearlman—known for his thoughtful takes on sports media ethics, including the ongoing Dianna Russini controversy—responded to Jemele Hill's conversation about the industry's selective outrage over reporter-source relationships. Pearlman initially held back when the Russini story broke, calling it a painful double standard without demanding her career end. But now, he's not holding back anymore.

"I think Dianna Russini shouldn't work anymore in this business, I do. I think it's bullsh*t," Pearlman said. "But, man, do we make allowances for men. We make so many allowances for men. Jay Glazer is the perfect example. You know why Jay Glazer isn't having sex with the athletes? Because he's a heterosexual male and he covers men, otherwise, he's doing anything but. 'Hey, come to my BBQ. Hey, let me work you out. Hey, you're my buddy. Hey, let's hang out. Hey, tell me stuff, it's OK.' Like, that's access journalism 101. That's exchanging for exchanging. That's exactly what he does."

The irony couldn't be more striking. As Pablo Torre recently reported, at this year's owners meetings, Russini and Mike Vrabel were spotted hosting their own competing party directly across the pool from Glazer's coaches gathering. It was an almost absurdly literal illustration of what Pearlman is now saying outright: from a distance, what Russini was doing and what Glazer does look remarkably similar. The key difference? Who was involved and how far the relationship went.

"There's no excusing Dianna Russini. It's a bullsh*t move. She deserves to lose her job," Pearlman continued. "It's just weird to watch the industry pick and choose when it's a problem."

For sports fans and industry insiders alike, this raises uncomfortable questions about the fine line between building sources and crossing boundaries—and whether the rules of the game are applied equally to everyone on the field.
