New Miami Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley is doing something early on that could really help in his first stint as an NFL head coach.

When the Miami Dolphins wrapped up the 2025 season with a disappointing 7-10 record, the writing was on the wall for head coach Mike McDaniel. Enter Jeff Hafley, the former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator, tasked with turning the franchise around.

But here's what sets Hafley apart early in his tenure: he's taking a masterclass in offense. Despite being a lifelong defensive coach, Hafley is temporarily handing the reins of his defense to coordinator Sean Duggan so he can immerse himself in offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik's playbook.

"Once training camp hits I'll take [the defense] back over. [This] allows me to be the head coach right now and that's huge," Hafley explained on Richard Sherman's podcast. "I'm sitting in the quarterback meetings. I'm sitting in the offensive installs. Because what I learned from this go around is I have to learn everything that's going on. I can't be the defensive coach. I don't want the players to see me as just the defensive coordinator. I want them to see me, and feel me as the head coach. And I want to know all of the scheme."

This cross-training approach is a breath of fresh air for a Dolphins team that often felt fragmented under McDaniel, who was notoriously hands-off with his defensive staff. Slowik, a holdover from McDaniel's staff who previously coordinated the Houston Texans offense, has a pre-existing rapport with Hafley from their time together with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017-18.

For a first-time head coach, this kind of holistic understanding is invaluable. It builds trust with players on both sides of the ball and ensures the entire team feels the head coach's presence, not just one unit. If Hafley can translate this big-picture perspective into better communication and game-day adjustments, Miami might finally have the sustained success it's been chasing.
