From dark horse to top 40, Rafael Jodar is proving that his breakout season is no fluke. The 19-year-old Spanish sensation has carried his electrifying form into the Italian Open, where he kicked off his campaign with a gritty straight-sets win over Nuno Borges (7-6, 6-4) in Rome.
Jodar first turned heads with a stunning run to the semifinals in Barcelona, where he delivered a series of eye-catching performances that announced his arrival on the big stage. He didn't stop there. In Madrid, he backed it up by reaching the quarterfinals, taking down top-tier talent like Alex de Minaur and rising star Joao Fonseca before finally falling to world number one Jannik Sinner. Those results have propelled him to a career-high ranking of No. 34 in the world—just two spots shy of earning a seed at Grand Slam events.
When asked about the secret to his rapid rise, Jodar kept it refreshingly simple during his post-match press conference. "I think just try to accept whatever happens in the tournaments," he explained. "Some weeks you have to accept that things are not going as you could like to. But yes, try to be there and learn from those matches. I think it's very important to analyze the matches and to also share your thoughts with your team. They can give you feedback. I think that was really, really important. I follow my own path, but I think I'm doing a great job in accepting things."
With the win over Borges, Jodar's season record now stands at an impressive 18 wins and 8 losses. But the teenager isn't getting ahead of himself. "I think overall, I have to improve everything," he admitted. "If you want to play against the best players in the world, you have to have a really complete game, and you have to play at a high level for a long time. All these tournaments, we know that we have to be there in every tournament that we play. The most important thing for me is to enjoy the process. I think I'm doing a great job in that."
Jodar also acknowledged the novelty of his situation. "It's my first time. It's going to be my many first times for me since this is my first year on tour. So yeah, just try to enjoy every tournament and obviously try to do my best." Next up, he faces M—another chance to prove that this young star's journey is only just beginning.
