Going deep with the Golden Gophers’ scheme, returning personnel, and unknowns

Minnesota football is gearing up for a pivotal 2026 season, and there’s plenty to unpack as the Golden Gophers look to build on a year of contrasts. Special thanks to Max Oelerking of Ski U Pod for joining us on the podcast to break down the roster—here’s what you need to know.

The 2025 season was a study in paradoxes for Minnesota. The team boasted more talent than in 2024, but faced a significantly tougher schedule. Head coach P.J. Fleck and new defensive coordinator Corey Collins brought a more aggressive approach, which paid off in key moments by preventing winnable games from slipping away. However, that same aggression backfired at times, leaving the defense exposed and turning other contests into unwinnable battles. The Gophers also benefited from one of the most stable and loyal coaching staffs in the Big Ten, but there were lingering questions about whether complacency had set in at certain positions.

After their matchup against Oregon—which went about as expected—Minnesota closed out the season with games against Northwestern, Wisconsin, and New Mexico. (Interestingly, the Lobos largely transplanted Coach Eck’s staff and roster from the Idaho team Oregon faced in the 2024 opener.) Those final three contests unfolded largely as my algorithmic model predicted, with only minor exceptions. For a deeper look at the Gophers’ 2025 performance and style, check out our in-season preview—there’s little to update on the season’s conclusion before the offseason changes we’re focusing on here.

Now, let’s talk about the future. Young quarterback Lindsey, who started as a freshman and is hopefully on a four-year development plan, showed encouraging signs in his debut season. He finished with a 126.9 NCAA passer rating—just under one standard deviation below the median—but he was working against some tough odds. The playcalling leaned heavily on short passes, the receiver corps struggled to produce, and the offensive line, particularly on the right side, offered shaky protection. Despite those challenges, Lindsey’s quarterback error rate on my tally sheet is right on schedule for a promising trajectory. Keep an eye on this rising star as he continues to grow.

As the Gophers prepare for 2026, the foundation is there—now it’s about consistency and execution. Stay tuned for more updates as we track Minnesota’s journey through the offseason.
