The Baltimore Ravens have signed a veteran quarterback to their offseason roster. Here's why that's bad news for Diego Pavia.

The Baltimore Ravens just dealt a tough blow to undrafted free agent Diego Pavia's roster hopes. The team is signing veteran quarterback Skylar Thompson, adding another layer of competition to an already crowded quarterback room.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Thompson is joining the Ravens on an offseason deal. For now, Baltimore plans to carry five quarterbacks, though that number is almost certain to shrink as training camp approaches.

Thompson brings NFL experience that Pavia simply can't match. In 10 career games with two starts, Thompson has completed 58.7% of his passes for 721 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. That track record gives him a significant edge over the former Vanderbilt star if the Ravens need to trim the roster.

Currently, the Ravens' quarterback room includes locked-in starter Lamar Jackson, veteran backup Tyler Huntley, Thompson, Pavia, and undrafted free agent Joe Fagnano from UConn. Head coach Jesse Minter has said the team could carry anywhere from three to five quarterbacks this offseason, meaning at least two of these players will eventually be cut.

The writing was already on the wall for Pavia's long-term chances. Even before the Thompson signing, making the 53-man roster was an uphill battle for any undrafted free agent behind Jackson and Huntley. However, Pavia's skill set—which closely mirrors Jackson's dual-threat ability—made him a more intriguing fit than Fagnano, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley.

There is a silver lining: Pavia recently participated in the Ravens' rookie minicamp and has not been released in the days since. For a player fighting for any foothold in the NFL, that's a small but meaningful victory.

At the end of the day, the Ravens are loading up on quarterback depth for the long offseason ahead. For Pavia, the road just got steeper—but in the NFL, the only thing certain is that nothing is certain until the final cuts are made.
