The New York Liberty will have to start the WNBA season without their star point guard. Sabrina Ionescu, the former Oregon standout and face of the franchise, is expected to miss the first two weeks of the season after rolling her left ankle in the Liberty's preseason finale.
The injury occurred on May 3 when Ionescu attempted a reverse layup against the Connecticut Sun. She limped off the court and headed straight to the locker room, leaving fans and teammates holding their breath. Fortunately, an MRI revealed no "significant injury," according to the New York Post, but the team will reevaluate her status in two weeks.
This timeline means Ionescu will sit out both of the Liberty's road games against the WNBA expansion team, the Portland Fire, at the Moda Center on May 12 and 14. For Oregon fans, this is a tough break—these are New York's only trips to the state this season, and seeing their hometown hero play in person will have to wait.
However, there's still a bright spot for Ducks faithful. Former Oregon star Satou Sabally, who signed with the Liberty this offseason, is expected to suit up. She joins a star-studded lineup featuring Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart, giving New York a formidable championship core even without Ionescu on the floor.
If you're hoping to catch the Liberty live on the West Coast, mark your calendars: they'll visit the Seattle Storm on June 25 and head to San Francisco to face the Golden State Valkyries on June 28. Until then, Liberty fans will be counting down the days until their floor general returns to action.
