Daniel Barez enters Saturday's UFC Vegas 117 on the last fight of his UFC deal. He hopes to get a renewal by beating Luis Gurule.

Daniel Barez steps into the Octagon this Saturday with more than just a fight on his hands—he's fighting for his UFC future. The Spanish MMA pioneer enters UFC Vegas 117 on the final bout of his current contract, and a win over veteran Luis Gurule could be the key to keeping his dream alive.

At 37 years old and closing in on 15 years as a professional, Barez (17-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) isn't ready to hang up his gloves just yet. Saturday's matchup on the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night 276 at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas marks the fourth and final fight of his UFC deal. It's a make-or-break moment for the flyweight, who knows that a solid—and impressive—victory over Gurule (10-3 MMA, 0-3 UFC) could earn him a new contract.

"Yes, I need to make this ride last as long as possible," Barez told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "Everyone knows the long road I've had to take to get here. I've talked to my manager, and they can tell you thousands of things, but it all depends on this Saturday. After that, we'll know."

Barez is clear-eyed about what's at stake. He's not just looking for a win—he needs a statement. "Yes, of course. Totally. It's obvious. If I can win this next fight, that's a positive start," he said. With a 1-2 record in the UFC so far, the Spanish fighter knows that a lackluster performance won't cut it.

Despite the pressure, Barez remains remarkably calm. In fact, he says this fight carries the least pressure of his career. "My life won't change whether I'm in the UFC or not. I have my friends, my family, a strong circle. My life will be the same," he explained. "I obviously want to be in the UFC and continue fighting in the best promotion in the world. I'm one of the ones that took the longest to sign with the UFC, and I finally made it happen. So I'm going to do everything to get a renewal."

If Barez does secure a new deal, he's hoping for a different approach to his career. Since signing with the promotion three years ago, he's only fought three times—a pace he'd like to see change. But first, he has to get past Gurule, and that means delivering a performance that reminds everyone why he belongs on the sport's biggest stage.
