Arsenal's David Raya has etched his name into the Premier League history books, becoming the first goalkeeper this season to claim the prestigious Player of the Matchweek award. The 30-year-old's heroics in goal against West Ham United earned him the honor, with a staggering 55% of the fan vote—leaving his closest competitor trailing at just 20%.

It was a moment of sheer brilliance that sealed the award for Raya. With the score locked at 0-0, he produced a stunning save to deny Mateus Fernandes—a stop that pundit Troy Deeney later called the "save of the season." But Raya's impact didn't stop there. In a nerve-wracking late-game scenario, he made a courageous decision to come off his line and claim a corner instead of punching the ball clear. That bold choice paid off when he was fouled, leading VAR to disallow West Ham's potential equalizer and preserving Arsenal's vital clean sheet.

As legendary Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman noted, Raya's willingness to catch rather than punch was key—a less aggressive approach might not have drawn the foul. This single decision kept the Gunners on track for a crucial victory.

Raya wasn't the only Arsenal star to earn plaudits. Deeney named three Gunners in his BBC Team of the Week: Raya, Gabriel Magalhães, and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Deeney praised Gabriel for delivering "massive blocks" at "massive moments," while highlighting Lewis-Skelly's versatility. "He started in midfield, then Arsenal changed mid-game and moved him to left-back, and he didn't put a foot wrong," Deeney wrote. "He's one of the players in the last three to four weeks who has really stepped up."

While individual awards are nice, the Arsenal squad has bigger fish to fry. With the Premier League title and Champions League glory both within reach over the next two-and-a-half weeks, Raya and his teammates are laser-focused on the ultimate prize. Still, it's heartening to see the league's best performers get the recognition they deserve—especially when they wear the famous red and white.
