Newcastle United are gearing up for a summer transfer window where speed will once again be their greatest weapon. Head coach Eddie Howe has made it crystal clear that the club cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of last year, when a sluggish approach saw them miss out on key targets and scramble for late signings.

Before the 2023 summer window even opened, Howe was already preaching the importance of acting fast. But what followed was one of the most turbulent transfer periods in the club's recent history. Newcastle missed out on several first-choice targets, saw star striker Alexander Isak depart for Liverpool, and were forced to complete most of their business in the frantic final weeks of August.

This time around, Howe insists things will be different. "You will find the best players that are available on the market won't hang around for too long," he said on Friday. "The speed at which the transfer market moves now is very quick. Teams are very efficient, and we have to be there as one of those teams."

The good news for Newcastle fans is that the club now has a proper executive structure in place. Last summer, Howe operated without a sporting director or chief executive, which made quick decision-making nearly impossible. Now, with sporting director Ross Wilson and chief executive David Hopkinson in the fold, the Magpies are better equipped to move swiftly and smartly.

But challenges remain. Without Champions League football on offer and unable to compete with the wage bills of the Premier League's elite, Newcastle must be creative. Doubts also linger over the futures of key players like Anthony Gordon, meaning the club may need to rebuild on the fly.

"We had Champions League football and finances last year, and it was still very difficult to attract the players that we wanted," Howe admitted. "I certainly don't think that challenge is going to be easier – it's going to be harder. But the lure of Champions League football was not all-defining for us, so there's a balance to it."

For Newcastle, the message is clear: speed is everything. In a market where top talent vanishes quickly, the Magpies are determined to be first in line this summer.
