The Copa Verde is heating up, and three teams have already punched their tickets to the semifinals after an action-packed Wednesday night. Nacional-AM, Paysandu, and Rio Branco-ES are all moving on, leaving just one spot up for grabs.
This year, the Copa Verde has been split into two regional competitions: the Copa Norte and the Copa Centro-Oeste. The final semifinalist will be decided on May 13, when Vila Nova faces Anápolis at the Onésio Brasileiro de Alvarenga stadium in Goiânia.
Nacional-AM secured their spot in dramatic fashion, edging past Porto Velho in a penalty shootout (2-0) after a 1-1 draw in regular time at the Arena da Amazônia. Goalkeeper Caio Alan was the hero of the night, saving three penalty kicks to send his team through.
Meanwhile, Paysandu put on a clinical performance at the Zinho de Oliveira Stadium in Marabá, thrashing Águia de Marabá 5-1 in a dominant display. With both Nacional and Paysandu advancing, they'll now face off in the Copa Norte final, playing home-and-away matches to determine who will represent the region in the Copa Verde final.
Over in the Copa Centro-Oeste, Rio Branco-ES pulled off a gritty 1-0 away win against Gama at Bezerrão. They'll now await the winner of Vila Nova vs. Anápolis to determine who will compete in the Copa Centro-Oeste final. The champion of that bracket will then face the Copa Norte winner in the ultimate showdown for the Copa Verde title.
The stakes couldn't be higher as these teams battle for regional supremacy and a shot at the coveted Copa Verde championship. Stay tuned for more action as the tournament continues to deliver unforgettable moments.
