The Las Vegas Raiders made a splash in the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza first overall out of Indiana University. The reigning Heisman winner was the consensus top pick, but not everyone is convinced he’s ready for the next level.

An anonymous ACC coach recently voiced concerns about Mendoza’s NFL potential, telling ESPN, “He’s a good decision-maker, but I don’t think he’s got the NFL traits. They’re all back-shoulder throws. That’s not working in the NFL. His receivers made plays to make him look better than he is. In the NFL, those throws are getting picked off.” The coach, who game-planned against Mendoza during his time at California before his transfer to Indiana, raises a valid point about the quarterback’s style.

However, the Raiders have a plan in place. They added veteran Kirk Cousins this offseason, giving Mendoza time to develop behind a seasoned pro. This approach could help the rookie refine his skills and adjust to the NFL game without the pressure of starting immediately.

Cousins, for his part, is keeping it simple. “If that’s not me, I don’t want to be out there,” he said Wednesday, per ESPN. “I don’t think that’s the best thing for the team. If I am the best option, then I believe it’s important that those guys are out there. But I’m excited to get the chance to lead, help influence in the locker room, do my part and most importantly, help our team win.”

With minority owner Tom Brady advising the Raiders, all eyes will be on how Las Vegas handles Mendoza’s development. Whether he sits and learns or steps up early, this is a story that will define the franchise’s future.
