Costco, the beloved wholesale retailer known for its budget-friendly deals, has sent shockwaves through the soccer world with a jaw-dropping $39,100 hospitality package for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As the summer tournament approaches, ticket pricing has become a hot-button issue, and this latest offering from the retail giant is adding fuel to the fire.

The controversy over World Cup ticket prices has been brewing for months, with group stage games now costing more than attending the Super Bowl. The backlash has even reached the political arena, as New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill publicly called out FIFA for its exorbitant rates. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the pricing structure, despite U.S. President Donald Trump embarrassing him by declaring he wouldn't pay more than $1,000 for a ticket. Now, Costco's partnership with FIFA marks a surprising departure from its traditionally wallet-friendly image.

Infantino insists that FIFA is managing record-breaking ticket demand, but with thousands of seats still unsold, the high price points could backfire. Several matches are at risk of failing to draw capacity crowds, a stark contrast to the frenzy typically associated with the world's biggest sporting event.

While millions of shoppers flock to Costco for savings averaging 21.4 percent less than conventional supermarkets, these World Cup packages are clearly designed for a different clientele. The retailer has unveiled three exclusive hospitality packages for its members, with the most eye-popping option costing $39,100.

The most affordable package starts at $4,750 and includes two tickets to the U.S. Men's National Team's final group stage match against Turkey in Los Angeles. Alternatively, fans can skip that game and opt for two tickets to a Round of 16 match in New York or New Jersey—though there's no guarantee the USMNT will be playing. Either way, it's a steep price for a game day experience, even for die-hard soccer fans.

As the debate over accessibility and affordability continues, one thing is clear: this World Cup is shaping up to be a tournament of extremes, both on and off the pitch.
