After a two-year drought, the South Carolina Gamecocks have finally landed a high school running back commit—and he's a big one. Four-star prospect Brayden Tyson, a powerful 6-foot, 235-pound back from Snellville, Georgia, announced his commitment to head coach Shane Beamer's program on May 15, marking the program's first high school RB pledge since 2024.
Tyson, who attends Brookwood High School, is ranked as the No. 38 player in the state of Georgia for the Class of 2027 by the 247Sports Composite. His decision comes at a crucial time for the Gamecocks, who had not signed a high school running back since Matthew Fuller two years ago—a gap that Beamer himself highlighted when explaining the firing of running backs coach Marquel Blackwell last December.
Blackwell was let go less than 24 hours after the first day of the early signing period, and the program quickly brought in former Penn State assistant Stan Drayton to take over the position group. Drayton's arrival has already paid dividends on the recruiting trail.
In a ceremony that featured hats from South Carolina, Florida State, and Rutgers, Tyson ultimately chose the Gamecocks, placing the garnet and black cap on his head. And it's easy to see why the coaching staff is excited: According to MaxPreps, Tyson rushed for 1,292 yards on 163 carries as a junior, averaging an impressive 7.9 yards per carry. He scored 16 touchdowns, with a long run of 97 yards. His sophomore season in 2024 was even more explosive, as he racked up 2,210 rushing yards.
With a blend of size, speed, and a nose for the end zone, Brayden Tyson looks like the kind of back who could help power the Gamecocks' offense for years to come. For fans eager to rep the next generation of South Carolina football, this is a name to remember.
