World Athletics has made a decisive ruling, rejecting 11 high-profile requests from athletes seeking to switch their national allegiance to Turkey. The global governing body concluded the applications were part of a "coordinated recruitment strategy" orchestrated by the Turkish government, aimed at bolstering their team for future competitions like the LA 2028 Olympics.

The denied group includes some of track and field's biggest names. From Kenya, it features former women's marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei. The Jamaican contingent includes Olympic discus gold medalist Roje Stona and shot put bronze medalist Rajindra Campbell. Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili, who placed sixth in the 200m final at Paris 2024, and Russian heptathlete Sophia Yakushina round out the list.

In a strong statement, World Athletics' Nationality Review Panel found Turkey's strategy involved using a state-funded club to offer lucrative contracts, specifically to "attract overseas athletes" and facilitate these transfers. This move directly challenges the integrity of international competition, where allegiance changes are meant to reflect a genuine, lasting connection to a new nation, not simply financial incentive.

This isn't a new issue for the sport. World Athletics, led by President Sebastian Coe, significantly tightened its transfer rules in 2019 to combat what was seen as a form of "athlete trafficking," particularly concerning young talents. The rules are designed to protect the sport's development globally and ensure fair play.

Turkey has a history of successfully integrating transferred athletes into its national team. Most notably, Ramil Guliyev, who switched from Azerbaijan, stormed to a stunning 200m gold for Turkey at the 2017 World Championships. However, this latest coordinated effort has been deemed a step too far, marking a firm stance from the governing body against what it views as undermining the spirit of international athletics.
