Azzi Fudd's much-anticipated WNBA debut didn't exactly go according to plan—and now, the No. 1 overall draft pick faces another setback: she won't be joining the Dallas Wings' starting lineup anytime soon.
Coming off the bench in Dallas's season opener against the Indiana Fever, Fudd managed just three points on two shot attempts in 18 minutes of play. While the Wings escaped with a thrilling 107-104 victory, the performance marked the lowest scoring output for any top overall pick in their WNBA debut—a statistic that caught many around the league off guard.
Head coach Jose Fernandez, however, isn't hitting the panic button. Speaking to the media on Monday, the first-year coach acknowledged Fudd's potential while making it clear that patience will be key.
"Is she capable of (starting)? Yes, she is," Fernandez said. "When it does happen, I think she'll be ready."
The Wings boast one of the deepest backcourts in the league, featuring stars like Paige Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale. That depth actually works in Fudd's favor, allowing the former UConn standout to develop without the immediate pressure of carrying the offense. Fernandez emphasized that the team is taking the long view, focused on building Fudd's confidence and comfort level at the professional level.
Still, the coaching staff recognizes that adjustments are needed. Fernandez admitted he needs to scheme better to get Fudd more involved when she's on the floor, but he also credited opposing defenses for keying in on the rookie's elite shooting ability.
"I gotta get her more involved, get her some looks, but you got to give other teams credit too," Fernandez said. "Other teams prepare for really good players."
For now, Fudd will continue coming off the bench as the Wings prepare to face the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday night. While her starting debut remains on hold, the organization's measured approach suggests they're committed to letting their prized rookie find her rhythm—even if it takes a little longer than fans hoped.
