As the NFL gears up to officially release its 2024 schedule this Thursday evening, Mike Vrabel might want to look away from the screen—and possibly avoid social media altogether.
The annual schedule release has become a highlight of the NFL offseason, with teams crafting creative videos and memes that often include playful—and sometimes pointed—jabs at opponents. This year, one storyline looms large: the recent headlines surrounding Vrabel, who was photographed with Dianna Russini in a moment that sparked widespread chatter across the league.
According to a report from Front Office Sports, the NFL will not be reviewing or approving this year's schedule release content, giving all 32 teams full creative freedom. That means the door is wide open for teams to take shots at the Patriots' head coach.
“This is the day when teams are licensed to poke fun at each other. The Vrabel story has become such a public matter that teams can take the shot,” an FOS source said. “You may get a call from the Patriots. But the league is not going to get involved.”
The source added that the league typically only steps in around labor issues, the collective bargaining agreement, or referee matters. “The moments when they’re trying to negotiate—and they want everyone on message. If the Jets, Bills, or Chargers choose to ridicule Vrabel, that’s an issue between the teams. The league doesn’t need to mediate that.”
Given the Patriots' slate of opponents this season, the list of potential jokesters is extensive. AFC East rivals like the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins are obvious candidates, while the Chargers—always known for their clever schedule release content—are also in the mix. New England will also face the Broncos, Packers, Raiders, Vikings, Steelers, Bears, Lions, Chiefs, Seahawks, and Jaguars in 2024.
For fans who love the lighter side of the NFL, this year's schedule release promises to be one of the most entertaining—and potentially awkward—yet. And for Vrabel? Well, he might want to keep his sense of humor handy.
