Will Lungi Ngidi play in DC vs CSK IPL 2026 match? Coach provides big update

Ngidi had to be taken off the field on a stretcher and was hospitalised after the incident. It happened in the third over of Punjab Kings’ innings, bowled by Axar Patel, when Ngidi tried to take a catch off a shot by Priyansh Arya.

Delhi Capitals fans can breathe a sigh of relief as bowling coach Munaf Patel has delivered a major update on Lungi Ngidi's availability ahead of their crucial IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings. The South African pacer is now fully fit and ready to return after recovering from a concerning head injury.

The incident occurred during Delhi's home match against Punjab Kings on April 25, sending shockwaves through the stadium. In the third over of Punjab's innings, bowled by Axar Patel, Ngidi sprinted back to attempt a catch off Priyansh Arya's bat. Losing control mid-stride, he stretched desperately but couldn't get a touch, falling awkwardly on his head. The game came to a standstill for over 10 minutes as medical staff rushed to his aid, eventually taking him off the field on a stretcher and hospitalizing him. Vipraj Nigam stepped in as a concussion substitute.

"Everyone is fit. Lungi is fit. He didn't play two games because of the criterion of six days' rest," Munaf confirmed ahead of the CSK showdown. The enforced rest period has clearly worked in Ngidi's favor, with the pace spearhead now ready to bolster Delhi's bowling attack at a crucial stage of the tournament.

Ngidi's return couldn't come at a better time. Mitchell Starc has also joined the squad, making his season debut against Rajasthan Royals, and the duo's presence promises to transform Delhi's bowling fortunes. The Capitals learned a harsh lesson against Punjab Kings, where they failed to defend a mammoth 264 total—the highest successful chase in IPL history.

"When there is a wicket-taking bowler in the PowerPlay, the whole scenario changes," Munaf explained, highlighting Starc's impact. "220 or 230 is being chased because you are not able to take wickets in the PowerPlay. When the main bowler is there and takes a few wickets in the PowerPlay, it makes a big difference. Bowling in partnerships was missing, but that has been added now."

The coaching staff also addressed the recent absence of David Miller from the playing XI. "You can only fit in four foreigners in the XI. Sahil was injured, so we needed an opener and we thought of giving Pathum another chance. We had to play two overseas fast bowlers. So only one between Pathum and Miller could play. We went with Pathum because an opener was required," Munaf clarified, offering insight into the team's selection strategy.

With Ngidi and Starc leading the charge, Delhi Capitals look poised to make a strong statement in their upcoming matches. For fans, the sight of these two pace giants sharing the new ball is a mouthwatering prospect that could define the rest of their IPL 2026 campaign.
