Brad Cox grew up in Louisville, blocks from Churchill Downs, dreaming of winning the Kentucky Derby. Is the trainer destined for the winner's circle?

For Brad Cox, the Kentucky Derby isn't just another race—it's a childhood dream written in crayon and sketched on cardboard. Growing up just blocks from Churchill Downs in Louisville, a young Cox would grab oversized pieces of cardboard, draw his own racetrack, and ask friends and family, "What horse are you?" while guiding plastic figurines to an imaginary starting gate. His mother still keeps a fifth-grade drawing where he boldly declared, "I'm going to win the Kentucky Derby."

Fast forward more than three decades, and Cox has indeed won the Derby—but not in the way he once imagined. When Medina Spirit was disqualified from the 2021 race, Cox's colt Mandaloun was elevated to winner. The purse money was sweet, and the commemorative plaque now hangs in Barn 22 at Churchill Downs. But the true victory lap, the rose blanket, and that iconic winner's circle photo still elude him.

Now, as Derby 152 approaches, Cox has assembled a powerhouse trio that had racing fans buzzing. Commandment, Further Ado, and Fulleffort were three of the top five contenders—until Fulleffort was scratched Thursday with a bone chip in his left hind leg. Still, the remaining duo dominated the prep season: Fulleffort took the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks, Commandment captured the Grade 1 Florida Derby, and Further Ado won the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes.

When asked if Commandment feels like the favorite, Cox kept his focus where it matters most. "I don't know if he's a Kentucky Derby favorite, but I think he can be a Kentucky Derby winner. And that's what I'm looking for—the winner, not the favorite."

His father, Jerry Cox, was a $2 bettor who would walk two blocks from their Evelyn Avenue home to Churchill Downs. That same track, that same dream, now lives on in his son's barn. For Brad Cox, 2026 could finally be the year he gets to stand in the winner's circle—not by text, but in the flesh, with roses in hand.
