Liverpool’s 2025-26 season has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Arne Slot, fresh off a stunning Premier League title triumph in his debut campaign, was backed with over £450 million in the transfer market. But this season, the Merseyside giants have struggled to find their rhythm, with performances and results falling short of expectations.

Despite the slump, Liverpool are still within touching distance of Champions League qualification. However, the Anfield faithful are growing restless. During Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, fans voiced their displeasure, booing Slot after he substituted young talent Rio Ngumoha in the second half. While the club’s hierarchy hasn’t shown signs of pulling the trigger, history suggests managers rarely survive once they lose the support of the Kop.

Enter Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard’s brief stint at Real Madrid may have fizzled out—he lasted less than a year of a three-year contract—but his reputation remains sky-high. Chelsea have already placed him at the top of their shortlist to replace Liam Rosenior, so Liverpool need to act fast to win the race for his signature.

Alonso is no stranger to Anfield. He played for Liverpool under Rafael Benítez from 2004 to 2009, earning legendary status among fans. His tactical acumen was on full display at Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided the club to their first Bundesliga title in 2023-24 with an unbeaten domestic season. The Black and Reds also reached the Europa League final that year, narrowly losing to Atalanta.

Two years ago, when Jürgen Klopp announced his departure, Alonso was heavily linked with the Liverpool job. But he chose to stay at Leverkusen for one more season. Now, with Liverpool’s season spiraling and the fans’ patience wearing thin, the timing might finally be right for a reunion. With his deep connection to the club and a proven track record of developing talent—like Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong—Alonso could be the spark Liverpool need to reignite their glory days.
