Kansas basketball fans, get ready for a new face in the lineup! The Jayhawks officially announced the signing of forward Atticus Richmond on Tuesday, adding the incoming freshman to the roster for the 2026-27 season. Standing at an impressive 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds, Richmond comes to Lawrence from The Newman School in Massachusetts, and he's already generating buzz as part of a high-profile recruiting class that includes the nation's No. 1 overall prospect, Tyran Stokes.

Head coach Bill Self didn't hold back his enthusiasm for the young talent, drawing an intriguing comparison to a fan favorite. "Atticus is a youngster that has great size," Self said. "He has some perimeter skills but mainly plays inside and will add depth to our big man positions. He's been extremely well coached and well drilled. I look at him as a Mitch Lightfoot type when Mitch was coming to us out of high school."

For those who remember Lightfoot's journey, that's high praise indeed. Lightfoot developed into a key rotation player and helped the Jayhawks capture the national championship in 2022. With Richmond now in the fold, Kansas is looking to recapture that magic after a few seasons of falling short in March. The Jayhawks haven't made it past the second weekend of the NCAA tournament since that title run, and they're hungry to change that narrative.

This past season, Kansas finished 24-11 overall, advancing to the Big 12 tournament semifinals and the NCAA tournament's round of 32. While they notched some impressive wins, inconsistency kept them from reaching their full potential. Richmond will join a group determined to exceed those efforts and bring the Jayhawks back to national prominence. As the 2026-27 season approaches, all eyes will be on how this young forward fits into Self's system—and whether he can help Kansas chase another Big 12 crown and beyond.
