The New York Giants had a golden opportunity to land one of the top talents in the 2026 NFL Draft—but they let it slip through their fingers, and right into the hands of their division rivals.
With the No. 10 overall pick, the Giants had a chance to select Ohio State safety Caleb Downs, a player many scouts believe has superstar potential. But instead, New York opted for offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa out of Miami, leaving the door wide open for the Dallas Cowboys to swoop in.
According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, the Cowboys were so concerned the Giants might take Downs that they tried to trade up to No. 9 to beat them to the pick. Dallas ultimately only needed to move up one spot—from No. 12 to No. 11—to secure the dynamic safety.
"The Cowboys had tried to trade up to No. 9 to get Downs, fearful that the Giants would take him," Graziano wrote. "New York could have come out of the first round of the draft feeling like it had locked down two defensive cornerstones for a decade to come."
So why did the Giants pass? The answer comes down to one name: Jaxson Dart.
New York had already used the No. 5 pick on linebacker Arvell Reese, and with their second first-rounder, they felt a responsibility to support their second-year quarterback. Dart struggled to stay out of harm's way as a rookie, and the Giants front office was determined to add offensive firepower to protect him.
"I think there's a chance they'd have taken Downs at No. 5 if Reese had been picked in the top four," Graziano noted. "But what became clear to me after the draft in talking to people around that situation is that the Giants were determined to use one of their two top-10 picks on an offensive player in an effort to support second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart."
It's a classic draft dilemma: do you take the best player available, or fill a pressing need? The Giants chose need, and now they'll have to live with the consequences—especially if Downs becomes a star in Dallas, wreaking havoc on the other side of the NFC East rivalry for years to come. If Mauigoa pans out and keeps Dart upright, it might be a decision worth defending. But if Downs turns into the generational talent many expect, the Giants will be left wondering what might have been.
