Bill Ferrara said it was a "no-brainer" to take the call from Lady Vols basketball coach from Kim Caldwell to join her staff.

When Kim Caldwell came calling, Bill Ferrara didn't hesitate. For the veteran coach, joining the Lady Vols basketball staff wasn't just a career move—it was a homecoming of sorts, rooted in a memorable encounter nearly two decades ago.

Back in 2006, Ferrara was a graduate assistant on Carolyn Peck's staff at Florida when he was handed an unexpected challenge. An assistant coach fell ill just before a matchup against Tennessee, and Ferrara was asked to prepare the scout—his very first. The opponent? A Lady Vols squad led by redshirt freshman sensation Candace Parker.

The result was an instant classic. Florida pulled off a 95-93 overtime victory on February 26, 2006, a game Ferrara still calls "one of the best I've ever been a part of." But more than the win, it was the preparation that left a lasting impression. "I learned more about the game of basketball in that week preparing for Tennessee and preparing for one of Pat's teams than I ever did in all those years leading up to that," Ferrara recalled during a media session on May 13.

That's saying something for a coach who previously served as a video coordinator under Florida legend Billy Donovan. But breaking down film of Pat Summitt's relentless squad was a humbling experience. "I felt like I knew nothing about basketball," Ferrara admitted. He was struck by the Lady Vols' ferocious intensity—how they made opponents earn every basket, how they crashed the boards on every possession, demanding you box them out or risk surrendering an offensive rebound.

That tradition of toughness and excellence is exactly why Ferrara calls joining Caldwell's staff a "no-brainer." He's been tracking Caldwell's career for years and has long admired her coaching acumen. The fact that their offensive philosophies align? That's "just a cherry on top," according to Ferrara.

But there's a bigger goal driving him: a shot at the Final Four. The Lady Vols haven't reached that stage since 2008, when Parker led them to a second straight national championship. For Ferrara, that drought isn't a deterrent—it's motivation. "That's a pretty cool thing to chase," he said with a smile.

Now six weeks into working alongside Caldwell, Ferrara is already seeing the pieces come together. And for a coach who once learned the game by studying Summitt's teams up close, the opportunity to help restore Tennessee to its rightful place among the nation's elite is nothing short of a dream job.
