Who Should the Islanders Draft With Their First Round Pick?

The New York Islanders are back in the draft lottery for the second straight year after missing the playoffs this season. Unlike last year, there was no dramatic leap up the board—the Islanders will stay put at 13th overall in the NHL Draft.

Despite an already impressive prospect pool, the team still has some clear needs to address. At pick 13, the Islanders should focus on adding either a goal-scoring forward or a right-shot defenseman. Fortunately, several players fitting that description are projected to be available in this range.

One name to watch is Ryan Lin, a prospect whose draft ranking varies wildly—anywhere from 9th to 26th depending on the scouting board. But if he's still on the board at 13, he'd be an excellent choice.

Lin, a right-shot defenseman from the WHL's Vancouver Giants, put up impressive numbers this season: 15 goals and 43 assists for 57 points in just 53 games. He also represented Team Canada at the U18 World Junior Championship, notching six points in five games.

Standing at 5'11", Lin is on the smaller side for a defenseman, but his offensive game is anything but small. His puck-moving skills, high hockey IQ, and blazing speed make him a dynamic threat. He's effective in the defensive zone too, with a solid two-way game that scouts love.

That said, Lin still has areas to develop. He can struggle with offensive zone reads at times, turning the puck over in key moments. And his size limits his physical presence—something he'll need to build on as he transitions to the next level.

Lin is committed to the University of Denver, where he'll play under coach David Carle—a move that should accelerate his development. He projects as a top-four defenseman with the ability to quarterback a power play. Given the Islanders' need for a right-shot defenseman and Lin's high upside, he'd be a fantastic pick at 13 if he's still available.
