The NBA Draft is just around the corner, and two California teams are reportedly eyeing a surprising prospect from the national champion Michigan Wolverines. But here’s the twist—it’s not the name most fans expect.

According to a new report, both the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Clippers could be willing to take an early gamble with their top-10 picks in June. While all eyes are on Michigan superstar Yaxel Lendeborg, the player generating buzz behind the scenes is towering center Aday Mara.

Let’s rewind. Over the weekend, the Kings and Clippers learned their draft positions, and the results couldn’t have been more different. Sacramento, despite a strong chance at a top-four pick, slipped to seventh overall. The Clippers, on the other hand, caught a rare stroke of luck and landed the fifth pick—a spot they earned through a bold midseason trade that sent Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers for a top-four protected pick. When Indiana landed at fifth, the pick swung to LA.

Since then, draft chatter has linked both teams to elite guards like Darius Acuff Jr., Kingston Flemmings, and Keaton Wagler. But CBS Sports draft expert Adam Finkelstein suggests a different path entirely. After an impressive showing at the NBA Draft Combine, Mara is climbing draft boards fast—and the Kings and Clippers both have a glaring need for a center with his unique skill set.

“He has incredible size, rim protection, deceptive mobility, passing, and touch,” Finkelstein said. “It remains to be seen if either would pull the trigger at 5 or 7, but it is no longer viewed as impossible, particularly in that latter scenario.”

For context, Mara was originally projected to go much later in the first round. But at 7-foot-3 and 259 pounds, with a 7-foot-6 wingspan and a 9-foot-9 standing reach, he’s a shot-blocking force who can change the geometry of a game. While Lendeborg was the statistical engine for Michigan—ranking first or second in points, rebounds, assists, and steals—Mara offers a rare, game-changing presence in the paint.

If the Kings or Clippers decide to swing big on draft night, don’t be surprised if it’s the Spanish giant, not the senior star, who hears his name called early.
