In a move that marks the end of an era, Whitefish Bay girls basketball coach Jon Schneider has announced he is stepping down—just weeks after leading the Blue Dukes to their first-ever WIAA state championship this past March.
The news was confirmed by Whitefish Bay activities director Randee Drew, who noted that the head coaching position was officially posted on Friday, May 1. "It is true Jon is stepping down to spend more time with his family," Drew shared in an email. "We do not have a coach in place. We just posted the position."
Schneider took the reins of the program after the 2014-15 season, succeeding former coach Rick DeKeyser. Over the past decade, he transformed the Blue Dukes into a powerhouse, compiling an impressive 180-96 record. Under his leadership, the team made two state tournament appearances and captured the program's first North Shore Conference title since the 2005-06 season—sharing the crown with Hartford this past year.
The crowning achievement came this March in a heart-stopping 64-63 victory over Beaver Dam in the Division 2 state championship game. The win was sealed by a dramatic, game-saving defensive stand from Carrington Balthasar and Rowan Counsell, etching their names into program history and delivering the school's first gold ball in girls basketball.
Schneider's departure leaves big shoes to fill, but his legacy is secure: a state title, a conference championship, and a program that now knows what it takes to win on the biggest stage. As Whitefish Bay begins its search for a new leader, the community will forever remember the coach who brought home the gold.
