The Chicago White Sox have made a significant early-season adjustment, optioning Opening Day starter Shane Smith to Triple-A Charlotte. This move comes after three challenging starts for the right-hander, who was an All-Star as a rookie just last season.
Smith's early struggles have centered on fastball command, leading to a 0-2 record and a 10.80 ERA. While he managed 3 1/3 scoreless innings against Baltimore on Tuesday, the effort required 99 pitches, highlighting the efficiency issues plaguing his outings. He has walked nine batters in just 8 1/3 innings of work this season.
Manager Will Venable emphasized this is about development, not demotion, stating Smith is "a very good pitcher" and "an important part of this organization." The goal is for Smith to rediscover his rhythm and return as the dominant pitcher he proved he can be. The club does not anticipate his stay in the minors will be a long one.
In corresponding moves, the White Sox selected left-hander Tyler Schweitzer's contract and transferred utility man Brooks Baldwin to the 60-day injured list. For Smith, the focus now shifts to the Charlotte mound, where he'll work to refine his command and earn a quick trip back to the South Side.
