Kansas City could still use the free agent market to fill its remaining holes after the draft.

Every NFL Draft weekend brings a surge of optimism, making fans believe their team is just a few picks away from glory. But once the confetti settles, reality hits—draft picks can only patch so many roster holes, and the season is fast approaching.

The Kansas City Chiefs were relatively active in the first wave of free agency, but they entered the draft with clear needs at wide receiver, defensive end, defensive tackle, and cornerback. Depth at linebacker and a blocking tight end were also on the wish list. After the draft, the Chiefs landed a top-10 cornerback, a 3-technique defensive tackle in the first round, and a designated edge rusher. However, wide receiver wasn't addressed until the fifth round, and no linebackers or tight ends were added. That leaves several positions still ripe for a free-agent boost—and another defensive end wouldn't hurt either.

If we're dreaming, Stefon Diggs would be the ideal signing. But realistically, it's a tough fit. Diggs is a prideful veteran, and it's hard to see him embracing a role-player gig in Kansas City. Add in recent off-field concerns, and the juice probably isn't worth the squeeze for a 32-year-old.

Jauan Jennings has been a popular name all offseason—he seemed like a perfect scheme fit. But with news that Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice isn't expected to face NFL discipline, the calculus changes. Jennings is likely looking for a one-year deal to maximize his value next offseason, and Kansas City doesn't feel like the right landing spot for that.

That brings us to two familiar faces: Tyreek Hill and JuJu Smith-Schuster. No team values Smith-Schuster quite like the Chiefs, so he remains on speed dial as the offseason reveals what to expect from rookies Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen. And then there's Tyreek—a reunion that would certainly make waves.
