Carolina's 2024 first-round draft pick has struggled with consistency and on-field awareness.

Xavier Legette entered the NFL with high expectations as the Carolina Panthers' first-round pick in the 2024 draft, but his road to becoming a reliable target has been anything but smooth. As the team's wide receiver room grows increasingly crowded, the question on every fan's mind is: where does Legette fit in?

Through his first two seasons, Legette has struggled with consistency and on-field awareness, leaving coaches and fans alike searching for answers. A defining moment came during a Week 2 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, when a critical sequence perfectly illustrated his growing pains.

With just over a minute left before halftime, quarterback Bryce Young scrambled to get his offense set. Tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders made what appeared to be a first-down grab on a low throw, but as officials huddled to discuss the play, Legette casually jogged back to the line of scrimmage. By the time he arrived, the officials had overturned the catch, forcing the Panthers to punt. The Cardinals capitalized, scoring with four seconds left in the half and ultimately holding on for a 27-22 victory—one of just two wins they'd manage the rest of the season.

That game was a microcosm of Legette's early struggles. He finished with just one catch for minus-2 yards, becoming only the second player in NFL history to record negative yardage on at least eight targets. Over his first two starts, he managed just four catches for eight yards, with his lone rushing attempt going nowhere.

Despite the rocky start, Panthers head coach Dave Canales has remained steadfast in his support. "I believe in Xavier," Canales said. "This is a guy I truly believe in because of the way he's wired, the way he works at it, the way he continues to train."

General manager Dan Morgan echoed that sentiment, doubling down on Legette's potential during an appearance on Sports Radio WFNZ. "Xavier's putting the work in, his body looks great, he's in great shape right now and we're excited about him," Morgan said. "Sometimes it takes guys a little time to develop and get an understanding of what it takes to play at a high level in the NFL. I think Xavier will figure that out. We definitely still have a lot of belief in him."

For Panthers fans and fantasy owners alike, Legette remains a work in progress. With a deep receiver room and mounting pressure to perform, the 2025 season will be a critical proving ground for the young wideout. Whether he rises to the occasion or gets lost in the shuffle is a story worth watching—and one that could define Carolina's passing attack for years to come.
