Big moves are happening for Washburn men's basketball as head coach Brett Ballard announces three key transfers to the 2026-27 roster. The Ichabods are reloading with talent from across the Division II landscape, bringing in Lucas Mercandino (Lubbock Christian), Carson Yale (Minot State), and Harvey White (Colorado Mesa).

Ballard is clearly targeting proven DII performers. "We really like to try and take the Division II guys because I think there is, one, that they have proven at this level they can play at this level and two, I think there's an appreciation for the Division II level." This strategy makes sense for a program looking to rebuild after losing four starters from last season.

First up is Mercandino, a 6'6" forward from Argentina who averaged 11.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists last season. He made a strong impression against Washburn earlier this year, dropping 13 points with six boards and five assists. "Lucas out of Lubbock Christian is a versatile forward," Ballard said. "We played against him this year, and he played well against us and learned he's a versatile forward that can do a little bit of everything."

Then there's Yale, a 6'10" big man from Minot State who started 29 games as a redshirt freshman. He averaged 8.8 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 55% from the field—plus added 18 blocks, 12 steals, and 27 assists. "A Division II transfer who had really good numbers as a freshman," Ballard noted. "He's long and athletic, and I think will fill a big role at that five spot."

Rounding out the class is White, a 6'2" sophomore guard from Colorado Mesa. He put up 10.5 points per game with 110 total assists and 32 steals, giving the Ichabods a versatile combo guard with international experience.

With four starters to replace, these transfers bring immediate experience and proven production. Whether you're a fan tracking roster moves or just love seeing DII talent get a new home, this is a class worth watching.
