In a move that signals both continuity and ambition, Virginia Wesleyan University has named Brandon Elliott as its new Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics—while allowing him to keep his day job as the school's softball coach. And what a day job it is.
Elliott's Marlins are currently riding a perfect 45-0 record and sit atop the national rankings in NCAA Division III. The team is preparing for its 13th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, a streak that speaks volumes about the program's sustained excellence under his leadership. As the No. 1 seed in their four-team regional, Virginia Wesleyan will host games from Thursday through Saturday, looking to add another chapter to their remarkable season.
The numbers are staggering: Elliott has compiled a 716-158-2 record over 19 seasons at the helm, guiding the Marlins to three national championships in 2017, 2018, and 2021. His transition to athletic director duties builds on his previous role as Assistant Director of Athletics for Advancement, where he honed the administrative skills that will now serve the entire athletic department.
"Brandon Elliott represents the very best of Virginia Wesleyan University," said university president Scott D. Miller in a statement. "His extraordinary record of success, commitment to student-athletes, and deep understanding of our institutional culture make him uniquely qualified to lead Marlin Athletics into the future." Miller emphasized Elliott's role in building "one of the premier softball programs in NCAA Division III history" while demonstrating "integrity, discipline, and a relentless pursuit of excellence."
Elliott steps into a department that oversees 25 intercollegiate sports, replacing Andrea Hoover-Erbig, who departed after two decades at VWU—serving as both volleyball coach and athletic director—to become the athletic director at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
For a program that's been undefeated and untouchable this season, the message is clear: the leader who built a dynasty from the dugout is now poised to shape the entire athletic landscape at Virginia Wesleyan.
