The Minnesota Vikings may have found a hidden gem in undrafted free agent punter Brett Thorson, and he could be poised to shake up the team's special teams unit this summer.
When free agency kicked off, the Vikings lost wide receiver Jalen Nailor to the Las Vegas Raiders—a move that was expected, as Minnesota wasn't willing to overpay for a third receiver. But what flew under the radar was punter Ryan Wright also heading out the door, signing with the New Orleans Saints. Wright had a rollercoaster career between good and bad seasons, but he was coming off a year strong enough that the Vikings would have liked to keep him around.
In response, Minnesota turned to veteran punter Johnny Hekker. While Hekker once dominated the league, his performance has been trending downward, and at this stage in his career, he's clearly nearing the finish line. That opens the door for a fresh face—and Thorson is ready to walk through it.
The Vikings could have used a draft pick on a punter, but they didn't need to. After selecting kicker Will Reichard in the late rounds last year, they set their sights on Thorson, widely regarded as the best punter in college football. Despite not being selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Georgia Bulldog was scooped up as an undrafted free agent, and he brings an impressive resume from the SEC.
Thorson isn't just a power punter who can boom the ball downfield. He's also a master of finesse, with the ability to pin punts inside the 20-yard line and hang the ball long enough for coverage to swarm. That versatility could give him the edge over Hekker in what promises to be a competitive training camp battle.
In the NFL, kickers and punters often cycle through teams, with veterans rarely finding long-term homes. But Reichard looks like he could be a fixture for the Vikings, and if Thorson follows suit, Minnesota might have a special teams duo worth getting excited about. For a team always looking for an edge, this undrafted rookie could be the summer surprise that makes all the difference.
