The Virginia Cavaliers have nearly finalized their offseason roster puzzle, adding a key piece to their frontcourt with the commitment of St. Louis transfer forward Kalu Anya. The 6-foot-8, 225-pound senior brings veteran experience and physicality to head coach Ryan Odom's squad, which is coming off a remarkable 30-win debut season.
Anya is the third transfer addition for UVA this cycle, joining UC Irvine's Jurian Dixon and Arkansas State's Christian Harmon, as well as 2026 four-star center Favour Ibe. With Anya on board, the Cavaliers now sit at 14 players, just one shy of the new 15-player roster cap adopted under the NCAA's House settlement rules.
While many fans expected the next move to bolster the backcourt—particularly adding another true ball-handler behind rising sophomore Chance Mallory—Anya fills a different, equally important need. Mallory is poised for a breakout season, and both Dixon and Harmon can help share the playmaking load, but the frontcourt depth required attention.
Before Anya's arrival, Virginia's frontcourt looked strong at the top with Thijs de Ridder and Johann Grünloh as foundational starters. Ibe provides developmental depth behind Grünloh at center, but the backup power forward spot remained a question mark. Silas Barksdale, a former top-100 recruit who redshirted last season, was the natural internal candidate. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 22 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks per game as a high school senior at Woodside, earning a No. 92 national ranking from 247Sports in the 2024 class.
Anya's commitment adds immediate experience and toughness to that rotation, giving Odom more flexibility in managing minutes and matchups. As the Cavaliers continue to build on their successful first season under the new regime, this move ensures the frontcourt has both proven talent and promising upside.
