Mauricio Pochettino has been reflecting on his time as Tottenham Hotspur manager, revealing two potentially major transfers that could have taken Spurs to the next level

Mauricio Pochettino, now at the helm of the USMNT ahead of a home World Cup, has opened up about two major transfer misses during his Tottenham Hotspur tenure that he believes could have transformed the club's fortunes. The Argentine manager, who spent five-and-a-half years in North London, led Spurs to two Premier League title challenges, four top-four finishes, and a memorable Champions League final appearance in 2019 before his dismissal by chairman Daniel Levy.

In a candid interview on the 'Stick To Football' podcast, Pochettino revealed that Tottenham's infamous two-window transfer drought during the 2018/19 Champions League season wasn't the only missed opportunity. He pointed to a failed double signing in 2016 that still haunts him. "We tried to sign two players after the 2016 season," Pochettino recalled. "They moved to another club, won the Premier League, and beat us in the Champions League final."

The players in question? Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum—both of whom joined Liverpool and became pivotal figures in Jurgen Klopp's revolution. "For different reasons, we couldn't achieve that," Pochettino explained. "Sometimes you need this luck and timing. I remember we were interested, but they decided to move to Liverpool, and they both beat us in 2019."

The contrast was stark. While Tottenham maintained a stable core, Klopp was reshaping his squad into a title-winning machine. "When Jurgen came to play his first game against us at the old White Hart Lane, it was one team," Pochettino noted. "By the time they beat us in the Madrid final, it was a completely new squad. We had kept the same structure."

For any football fan who remembers Tottenham's near-misses, Pochettino's reflections offer a fascinating glimpse into the fine margins that define success at the highest level. It's a reminder that in football, timing, recruitment, and a bit of luck can make all the difference between celebrating trophies and wondering what might have been.
