Basketball players simply don't transfer from North Carolina State to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The NC State Wolfpack to UNC Tar Heels pipeline is pretty much nonexistent.

But now, in this era of the wild, crazy, overloaded transfer portal -- even this is possible.

NC State's Matt Able no longer plays for the Wolfpack. He has committed to the Tar Heels, according to On3 Sports' Joe Tipton.

And thanks to NC State beat writer Noah Fleischman, we know this remarkable stat:

Able is the first former NC State player to transfer to UNC since World War II.

Fleischman shared that the three prior to do so were the long ago Bernie Mock, Fred Swartzberg and Bones McKinney.

Able, for his part, is a major get for the Tar Heels.

He was a top-20 recruit in the Class of 2025 before joining NC State, and he went on to average 8.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 35.5% from 3-point range.

Able is a lanky guard, measuring 6-foot-6, and likely has aspirations of playing in the NBA. To further those goals, he joins new UNC coach Michael Malone, whose vast basketball coaching experience is mostly in the pros.

Played one season at UNC, averaged 9.1 points per game and was named to the All-Southern Conference Tournament Team.

Played two seasons at UNC, although accurate scoring numbers aren't available in Basketball Reference.

He made the All-Southern Conference Tournament Team in his lone season at UNC, like Mock, and averaged 9.8 points per game.

He went on to coach at Wake Forest and reached a Final Four as a head coach.
