Manchester United's search for a permanent head coach took an intriguing turn, with reports revealing that the club held exploratory talks with Aston Villa manager Unai Emery before ultimately deciding to back Michael Carrick for the role.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Red Devils' interest in Emery was more than just a passing thought. "There were talks with intermediaries of the Aston Villa boss," Jacobs revealed, though he described the approach as a "formative enquiry" rather than a full-blown negotiation. The Spaniard, who has revitalized Villa since taking over, was one of several high-profile names on United's radar.

Carrick, meanwhile, has seized his opportunity with both hands. The 44-year-old former United midfielder stepped into the dugout during a turbulent period, following Ruben Amorim's explosive departure after a fallout with sporting director Jason Wilcox. Since then, Carrick has brought the same calm authority he displayed during his 12-year playing career at Old Trafford, steering the team to the best form in the Premier League during his tenure. A return to the Champions League—INEOS's stated goal—was secured with three games to spare, making his case for the permanent job almost irrefutable.

The club's initial wish list was glittering. Paris Saint-Germain's Luis Enrique was the top target, widely regarded as one of the finest tacticians in world football. England boss Thomas Tuchel and Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti were also in the frame. But all three committed to their current roles, effectively ruling themselves out. Other candidates like Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner, and Julian Nagelsmann were considered too risky for INEOS to gamble on, leaving Carrick as the steady, proven choice.

United's hierarchy is now set to recommend Carrick for the full-time role in an executive meeting with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. While the Wallsend native's on-pitch results have been stellar, it's the actions of his peers—turning down the job—that may have ultimately sealed the deal. For Carrick, the dream job is now within reach, and United fans will hope his calm hand at the wheel continues to drive the club forward.
