UCLA football head coach Bob Chesney isn't your typical recruiter. When he sat down with Rich Eisen on Wednesday, he revealed a refreshingly honest approach that's already paying off big time for the Bruins.
As of May 7, UCLA boasts the No. 4 recruiting class for 2027 according to 247Sports, with 17 commits including nine four-star and eight three-star recruits. Only Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and USC rank higher—but Chesney insists he's not selling anything.
"Nothing. I specifically say to our coaches, we are not selling anything. We are presenting things, right? We are presenting what we have here at UCLA," Chesney explained.
So what exactly is he presenting? For starters, UCLA's status as one of the top public universities in the nation, its prime Southern California location, a growing legacy of national championships across other sports, a storied history of first-round NFL draft picks and Olympic athletes, and unmatched academic prestige.
"It's our time now as football to make sure we put this program back on the map," Chesney said. "Everybody else is winning. Everybody else is winning at a high level. In the classroom, out on the sports fields, in the arenas... You have a chance to breathe some rare air based on the people that you're surrounded with at UCLA."
That winning culture was on full display during UCLA's Spring Game, where Women's Basketball National Champion head coach Cori Close attended and even called plays—giving recruits a firsthand look at the championship environment Chesney is building.
The Bruins' transformation is already underway as they prepare for the 2026 season opener against the California Golden Bears at California Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 5. For Chesney, it's not about selling a dream—it's about showing recruits the reality of what UCLA can offer.
