The Los Angeles Rams raised eyebrows across the league when they used the No. 13 overall pick to draft quarterback Ty Simpson, a move that sparked immediate debate among fans and analysts alike.
With reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford firmly entrenched as the starter, many questioned why the Rams would invest such a high pick in a backup rather than addressing immediate needs—like adding a weapon such as wide receiver Makai Lemon to push for another Super Bowl run.
The criticism only intensified when head coach Sean McVay appeared less than thrilled during his post-draft press conference. His subdued demeanor led to speculation that the franchise's decision-making had caught him off guard. McVay later clarified that he was simply trying to be respectful toward Stafford, emphasizing the veteran's role as the team's unquestioned leader under center.
Simpson, however, isn't letting the noise distract him. Speaking at WalkUnitedLA's fundraising event at Hollywood Park on Saturday, the rookie quarterback addressed the controversy head-on—while admitting he hadn't actually watched the now-viral press conference.
"I didn't really see it," Simpson told reporters, per Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times. "But I know one thing though—I know coach McVay has been in contact and he's super fired up. And I'm super excited. I know that I couldn't have asked for a better situation, not only with the best player in the league in front of me but the best coach in the league at the helm."
The young signal-caller made it clear that he's focused on the opportunity, not the outside chatter. "I just know they called my name on the 13th pick—and, sign me up, I was going to Los Angeles," Simpson said. "I don't really get into all that. … I just have to make sure I do whatever my process is, and make sure that I do whatever the team needs me to do."
For Simpson, the path to playing time may be blocked by an MVP, but the chance to learn from both Stafford and McVay is a quarterback's dream scenario. Whether he's holding a clipboard or taking snaps, the rookie is ready to wear the horns with pride.
