Sometimes, the toughest losses plant the seeds for the biggest comebacks. For Bath golf standout Max McCallister, the sting of falling short at last year's regional finals—on his own home course, no less—became the fuel for a remarkable 2025 campaign.
Just one day after that disappointing finish, McCallister didn't sulk. Instead, he pulled out his phone and typed out a list of goals for his junior season. That simple act of determination set the stage for a spring that has been nothing short of spectacular.
All that extra time spent grinding on his game is paying off in a big way. McCallister was recently named the LSJ Boys Athlete of the Week, and for good reason. He's been the medalist in his last three CMAC matches, helping the Bees race out to an unblemished 7-0 record in conference play.
"I want to be better than I was last year—that was my main goal," said McCallister, who finished as the CMAC individual runner-up as a sophomore in 2025. "At the beginning of the season, I wasn't satisfied with how I was playing in practice. But then the first meet came around, and something just flipped. I fired a two-under 33 in that first match."
That impressive opening round was no fluke. McCallister has built on that momentum, already posting multiple rounds under par and positioning himself—and the Bees—for a run at conference titles. His ambitions don't stop there. He has his sights set on becoming a regional medalist and earning all-state honors, all while helping Bath continue its winning ways as a team.
"Going into the back half of the season, I'm just looking to finish what I started," McCallister said. "I started off strong, and I think I can finish strong. I've just got to keep my head right, not get too far ahead of myself, and take it match by match."
Through matches played as of May 14, McCallister boasts a 9-hole scoring average of 37.2 and an 18-hole mark of 81.2. Perhaps his biggest area of growth this season has been mental toughness—the ability to shake off a bad hole and stay focused on the next shot. It's a mindset that, combined with his undeniable talent, has the Bath standout poised to turn last year's disappointment into this year's triumph.
