The Toronto Maple Leafs officially introduced John Chayka as their new general manager on Monday, but the press conference quickly turned into a firestorm of tough questions. Veteran Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons didn't hold back, setting the tone with pointed inquiries about the logic behind the hire.
For a franchise that's been trending in the wrong direction—just two seasons away from marking 60 years without a Stanley Cup—the stakes couldn't be higher. After falling short in recent playoff runs and missing the postseason this year for the first time in a decade, MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley had called this hiring decision "the most important decision that I will likely make in my tenure."
Yet the choice to bring in Chayka raised eyebrows across the hockey world. The former Arizona Coyotes executive has been out of the league for five years after being suspended by the commissioner for "breaching his obligation to the club" during an ineffective tenure. Many considered the move baffling, and Simmons wasted no time expressing that sentiment.
Granted the first question at the presser—where Chayka was introduced alongside senior executive adviser Mats Sundin—Simmons delivered a blunt assessment. "You talk about the due diligence you did on John prior to hiring him. In the past three to four days, I've been in contact with about 20 people who work in the NHL, many prominent names we'd all know. Of the 20, only one was supportive of his hiring. The other 19 thought it was a sham, to be perfectly honest. Words like 'con artist,' 'liar,' 'salesman' were used. How did you come to a different conclusion than I was able to in a very short time?"
Pelley's response was measured but telling: "I must've talked to different people."
"That's it?" Simmons pushed back. "Because the hockey world today is astounded by this announcement."
"We've conducted due diligence, and it was deep due diligence," Pelley replied, though the exchange left many wondering whether the Leafs' leadership truly understood the skepticism surrounding their latest hire.
