A record-breaking defensive performance from Victor Wembanyama is not enough to prevent the Minnesota Timberwolves taking a lead against the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA play-offs.

In a thrilling opening to the NBA's Conference semi-finals, the Minnesota Timberwolves drew first blood against the San Antonio Spurs, overcoming a historic defensive display from Victor Wembanyama to snatch a 104-102 victory on the road.

The Spurs' defensive powerhouse, Wembanyama, set a new NBA play-off record with 12 blocks, adding 11 points and 15 rebounds to complete a rare triple-double that included blocks—a feat only achieved by two other players since the league began tracking the stat in 1973-74. Just days after being named the league's first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, the rookie sensation did everything he could to anchor San Antonio's defense, but it wasn't enough to stop the sixth-seeded Timberwolves from upsetting the second-seeded Spurs in Game 1 of the best-of-seven series.

For Minnesota, the return of Anthony Edwards was pivotal. The star guard, fresh off a knee injury, came off the bench to score 18 points, helping the Timberwolves hold off a late Spurs rally. The win gives Minnesota a 1-0 lead as the series shifts to Game 2 on Wednesday, still in San Antonio.

"We have to be better," Wembanyama admitted after the loss. "We need to figure it out in the next 48 hours, and I've got no doubt that we will. I would trust us."

Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference, the New York Knicks made a statement of their own, dismantling the Philadelphia 76ers 137-98 at Madison Square Garden. The third-seeded Knicks became the first NBA team to win three straight play-off games by at least 25 points, following up their series-clinching 140-89 win over the Atlanta Hawks with another dominant performance.

Jalen Brunson was unstoppable, scoring 27 of his game-high 35 points in the first half, while London-born forward OG Anunoby added 18 points. The Knicks' relentless attack left the 76ers shell-shocked, with coach Nick Nurse summing it up bluntly: "Wasn't any fun to be a part of, to be honest. But it's 0-1. Doesn't really matter if it's six points or 36 or whatever the hell it was."

Game 2 between the Knicks and 76ers is set for Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, while the Timberwolves and Spurs will battle again on the same night. With both series heating up, fans are in for a treat as the NBA play-offs continue to deliver high-stakes drama.
