NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered their fifth straight defeat in IPL 2026 as Mumbai Indians (MI) registered a six-wicket win in a crucial clash on Thursday in Dharamsala. Shardul Thakur’s four-wicket haul and Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 75 helped Mumbai chase down 201 in 19.5 overs and further dent Punjab’s playoff hopes. Batting first after being put in, Punjab got off to a strong start through Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh.

In a high-octane IPL 2026 clash at Dharamsala, Mumbai Indians delivered a crushing six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings, extending PBKS's losing streak to five matches and all but extinguishing their playoff hopes. The match was a showcase of explosive batting and crafty bowling, with Tilak Varma's unbeaten 75 and Shardul Thakur's four-wicket haul leading Mumbai's successful chase of 201 with just one ball to spare.

Punjab got off to a flying start after being asked to bat first. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh put on a 50-run partnership in just 33 balls, racing to 55/1 by the end of the powerplay. Priyansh looked in fine touch before Deepak Chahar bowled him for 27 in the sixth over. Prabhsimran then joined forces with Cooper Connolly, adding another 57 runs to push Punjab past the 100-run mark in the 12th over. The opener brought up his fifty with a single and celebrated with a massive six over backward square leg off Shardul Thakur.

But just when Punjab seemed in control, Mumbai's bowlers struck back with venom. Shardul, who had been expensive in his first over, turned the game on its head by dismissing both Prabhsimran (57) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (4) in the space of three balls. Raj Bawa then joined the party, removing Connolly before taking a sharp catch at short midwicket to send back Suryansh Shedge off Shardul's bowling. The middle-order collapse continued as Shashank Singh and Marco Jansen fell cheaply.

Despite the setback, Azmatullah Omarzai played a crucial cameo in the death overs, smashing 38 off just 17 balls, including two sixes and a four. Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett also chipped in as Punjab plundered 53 runs in the final three overs to finish at 200/8. For Mumbai, Deepak Chahar finished with 2/36, but it was Shardul Thakur's figures of 4/39 that proved decisive.

Chasing a daunting target, Mumbai came out with all guns blazing. Ryan Rickelton took the attack to Punjab's bowlers from the very first over, smashing 48 off just 23 balls with four fours and four sixes, while Rohit Sharma struggled at the other end. The openers raced to 59 without loss before Punjab pulled things back briefly. Yuzvendra Chahal bowled a tight spell, and Punjab managed to remove Rickelton, Naman Dhir, and Rohit Sharma in quick succession.

But that's when Tilak Varma took center stage. The young left-hander played a masterful innings, remaining unbeaten on 75 to guide Mumbai home with nerves of steel. His knock was a perfect blend of aggression and composure, ensuring Mumbai crossed the line in 19.5 overs. The win not only keeps Mumbai's playoff hopes alive but also serves as a reminder of the depth and firepower in their lineup. For Punjab, the loss is a bitter pill to swallow, as their campaign continues to unravel at the worst possible time.
